In late February 2020, Advanced Bionics issued a voluntary recall for one of their cochlear implant models. Based on the company’s press release, the models in question are the HiRes Ultra and Ultra 3d. Advanced Bionics started the process for recall when reports of hearing performance degradation were reported in the models. Upon issuing the press release, Advanced Bionics said they would be notifying recipients of the associated problem with the implant.
Since the first implant in 1972, an estimated 58,000 adults and 38,000 children have been recipients of a cochlear implant device. These devices should be treated like any other surgery, one with an inherent risk of side effects or malfunction. Still, many of these devices are implanted because of the benefits made to those who are deaf or have never heard sound.

Despite the number of cochlear implants across the world, there is still a decent amount of controversy that follows these devices. Some advocates feel like the parents are taking the child’s right to choose away from them. Others feel like not having the implant is a form of child abuse.
The implant itself is not without side effects. Patients can experience bleeding, fluid leakage, numbness, and infection, among others. Identifying the symptoms of a malfunctioning cochlear implant could be the best method of being able to restore hearing through another device in the long run.
More people are turning to personal injury lawyers for case consultation during this time. Personal injury lawyers handle cases that are initiated through a product recall. It is possible that if you or a loved one suffered from the HiRes Ultra and Ultra 3D that you could be entitled to compensation.
When a cochlear implant becomes defective or malfunctions, it puts the recipient at risk. It can even be a risker to remove the cochlear implant and replace it with another model. Patients who have experienced personal injury from these implants should contact a personal injury attorney for a free cochlear implant case consultation.
