A woman identified as Charlene Webb lost her life early Wednesday morning, August 5th, in an auto-pedestrian accident. The California Highway Patrol said in the accident report that the woman ran across Highway 99 in California’s Merced County area.
At about 12:30 a.m., a Toyota vehicle struck the victim in the northbound lanes of the highway, between Sultana Drive and Westside Boulevard. The investigators said that the driver pulled over after the collision, and reportedly moved the woman from the road to the median while waiting for first responders.

By the time they arrived, Webb, who sustained extensive injuries, had passed away. The CHP said that a preliminary investigation uncovered that the woman was initially traveling with a man in a car heading south on the highway.
The victim reportedly alighted from the car for unknown reasons and ran across the highway. The crash report did not contain any information on the man referred to, and the highway patrol did not make any arrests at the crash scene.
Auto-pedestrian collisions are not uncommon in California, and they have become a menace on the state’s roadways. While walking as a form of exercise and an alternative to driving is recommended, the Cal-Office of Traffic Safety admonishes pedestrians to exercise care and caution.
Pedestrians who choose to walk at night or during the early hours of the morning must do so wearing bright colors or reflective materials. Use a flashlight, stick to the sidewalks and crosswalks, avoid jaywalking, and look at both sides of the road before crossing.
