The coroner did not provide any details on what led to the collision. He disclosed that the occurrence remains under investigation in collaborative work between his office and the Logan County Sheriff’s Office.
Facts from accident reports showed that motor vehicle accidents are among the leading causes of death in Illinois, and they occur for several reasons. The latter include running red lights or stop signs, traveling outside the legal or posted speed limit, and driving while distracted.
Common distractions are eating, calling, texting, or changing CDs, while in transit, and it takes a distracted driver about three seconds to crash. Another factor is driving with or above the legal blood alcohol limit of .08% or under the influence of intoxicating chemical compounds.
Other causes are illegal lane change, driving on the wrong lane, tailgating, road rage, animal sighting, an underlying medical condition like heart defects, and mechanical or manufacturer’s defect. Drivers must avoid these factors to prevent accidents and adverse legal consequences that might arise.
