Pedestrian accidents are one of the leading causes of crash-related deaths. Law enforcement agencies and traffic authorities believe that drivers and pedestrians sometimes share the blame when a crash occurs and owe each other a duty of care when on the road.
Safety tips for pedestrians include wearing sharp, bright colors to make themselves visible when on the roadway and having a flashlight at night or in the early hours of the morning. Avoid jaywalking on highways and busy roads, stay sober, make eye contact with drivers, stay off the phone, and look left-right-left before crossing.
Drivers should avoid speeding in residential, business, and school districts, and pay close attention to their surroundings. Avoid drinking and driving, watch out for pedestrians at night and in bad weather, yield the way to them, and stop at designated crosswalks.
When an auto-pedestrian collision occurs, remain at the scene, make an accident report, and provide first aid while waiting for the first responders to arrive.
