The trio was southbound on Hibbard when the victim’s 4-wheeler fishtailed, went into the ditch, and struck a concrete support wall. The vehicle overturned, killing Hammond.
The police said that the teenagers were unhurt, but they witnessed the crash. The accident remains under investigation, and there’s no additional information at this time.
Four-wheelers are mostly all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), and they are relatively safe for people of the legal age to operate. The recommended age of driving the vehicle is 16 years and above as it requires special skills to speed up, make adjustments, slow down, and shift weight to turn the ATV.
Those who wish to ride the vehicle must ensure they undergo a training course and get certified. Without the certification, young people will not be able to operate the 4-wheeler without adult supervision.
Full-size ATVs weigh more than 600 pounds; thus, riders should operate only the appropriate vehicle for their size and age. Wear the approved helmet and eye protection, wear protective clothing, ride at a safe speed, and know Illinois’ ATV laws.
