According to Lifeguard Lt. Rick Romero, of San Diego Fire and Rescue, most of the people who escaped the boat managed to make it to the shore themselves. Six people, however, were pulled out to sea by a rip current. Three died as a result of the sinking.
Jeff Stephenson, an agent with US Customs and Border Patrol, claims that the boat was most likely a smuggling vessel that was used to transport undocumented immigrants into the U.S.
20 people were taken to local hospitals following the accident. Five were still hospitalized as of Monday evening, one in critical condition.
The person believed to operating the boat was taken into custody.
