Auto-motorcycle collisions usually end fatally or with severe injuries for the motorcyclist more than it does for the driver of a vehicle. The motorcycle’s open design leaves its riders at the mercy of the road, but they can mitigate the injuries by protecting themselves with a helmet and safety apparel.
The helmet must be compliant with the United States Department of Transportation guidelines and protect the face and eye. The safety apparel must cover other parts of the body, and they include ankle-length boots, full-fingered gloves, long pants, and a leather jacket or one with reflective material.
Motorcyclists must ride with care and caution, allow space for lane splitting and passing, and give accurate signals to other road users. Before and after operating a bike, check its parts and functionality, and keep riding skills honed through continuous education.
