According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash involved a 2014 silver Toyota traveling on the northbound lane of Highway 99 and a 2007 white BMW traveling southbound on the same road.

The investigators said that the driver of the second vehicle, 27-year-old Gabriela Michelle Sanchez of Chico, collided head-on with the Toyota driven by Medina. The man and the woman sustained fatal wounds from the collision, and the medics pronounced them dead at the scene. The crash remains under investigation, and alcohol might have played a role in it.
Avoidable reasons cause motor vehicle accidents, and one of them is wrong-way driving. The latter involves a driver that drives in the opposite direction intended for the lane of travel; that is, a person traveling west on an eastbound lane is going the wrong way.
Driving the wrong way is a traffic offense, and it often causes head-on collisions with fatal consequences. When there’s no accident, the driver would receive a ticket and pay a fine, but in the event of a crash where there’s severe bodily harm or death, the person would face criminal charges.
