At 11:32 a.m. the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the scene of an accident. It involved an Oldsmobile Aurora and a Chrysler minivan. It happened along East David Highway in between Kelsey Highway and Acre Town Road.
A 42-year-old woman from Ionia was driving a Chrysler minivan traveling eastbound. For unknown reasons, the woman lost control of the van. When she did, she crossed the center line in the road. She crashed into the Aurora, occupied by Nye and the unnamed male, head-on.
All of the occupants of both vehicles had to be extricated by the Berlin-Orange Fire Department. They were all transported by Life EMS to Sparrow Ionia Hospital.
Due to the serious nature of her injuries, Nye was transported from Sparrow to Lansing. She succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving there.
The names of the two drivers are not being released at this time. The accident is pending additional investigation by the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office accident investigators. Then it will be reviewed by the Ionia County Prosecutor’s Office.
Officials believe that the weather and the speed of the vehicle may have played a significant role in the collision between the two vehicles. They do not suspect that either driver was impaired at the time of the accident.
The Ionia County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Lakeview Post of the Michigan State Police, Life EMS, and the Berlin-Orange Fire Department.
It is unclear at this time if charges will be brought against the driver of the Chrysler minivan.
