Days after an Alabama man got arrested by the California Highway Patrol following a high-speed chase, he died in a traffic accident in San Joaquin County, California. The accident report disclosed a car struck Derris Kennedy, 26, on Saturday, October 17th.

The CHP said the man was walking through traffic on State Road 41 to State Road 180. Simultaneously, 60-year-old Michael Grill was merging onto the eastbound SR-180 and was unable to change course in time to avoid hitting the victim.

Kennedy died at the scene while medics conveyed Grill to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno for treatment of unspecified injuries. The CHP said they chased the victim three days earlier, on Wednesday, October 14th.

Officers with the Los Banos area office chased the man through Stockton but called it off after a while to avoid an accident. When the lawmen sighted the victim again, he was southbound on Interstate 5, driving a Volvo tractor-trailer recklessly and at top speed.

The CHP said Kennedy stopped north of Derrick Avenue after colliding with three cars on the interstate and flipping the tractor-trailer. They said the man tried to run away and carjack someone, but Coalinga and Los Banos officers stopped him.

The victim fought the lawmen, but they eventually subdued and took him into custody. The investigators booked him into the Fresno County Jail on several charges, including reckless driving causing injury.

The highway patrol said they were unsure what the victim was doing on the road on Saturday. The investigation is ongoing, and updates will be made available later.
