The agency said that the events leading to the collision began with a truck tractor pulling a set of bottom dump trailers southbound on H-43. As it approached the intersection with McCombs Avenue, a Honda Civic carrying Diaz and Martinez-Rojas traveled westbound on McCombs.
The Honda crossed the intersection directly into the truck tractor’s path, and the latter struck it on the passenger side. The CHP said the driver of the vehicle was unable to avoid the collision.
The collision force pinned the Honda under the truck, with the victims trapped inside. Diaz and Martinez-Rojas suffered significant injuries, and medics pronounced them dead at the scene.
The highway patrol closed H-43 and rerouted all northbound traffic to Highway 46. All southbound traffic took a detour to McCombs. The roadways reopened a little before 12:56 p.m.
Traffic collisions are avoidable if drivers obey the rules and regulations controlling their movements on the road. When at intersections, motorists must ensure they have the green light before proceeding and avoid running red lights.
