A traffic accident can be a single-vehicle crash, two-vehicle collision, or multiple vehicle collision. When it’s the latter two, it is further classified as a head-on collision, broadside collision, or rear-end collision.

It could also involve a motor vehicle and a person, a tree, a train, a motorcycle, or a bicycle. Common factors lead to either of the preceding or the above, and road users have a role in mitigating those factors and reducing the severity of the injuries sustained.

Asides from wounds and death, traffic collisions also result in financial loss and legal consequences for the person at fault. To determine fault, the investigating authority would look at the events leading to the collision and, at the conclusion, recommend to the District Attorney’s office possible charges.

The standard criminal charges are hit-and-run, driving under the influence, and vehicular manslaughter. A civil lawsuit comes into play when the victim wishes to recover damages, and it is either a personal injury or wrongful death action.
