The sheer speed at which the vehicle collided with the embankment caused it to become airborne. It finally came to rest in a field by the roadside. It isn’t clear if the vehicle rolled over or if Donald was ejected from the vehicle during the incident.
The crash was reported to the authorities at around 2:30 a.m. Once the first responders and paramedics reached the scene, they found the vehicle in a bean field.
John M. Donald was the sole occupant of the vehicle and he had sustained critical injuries in the crash. He was rushed to a hospital in Urbana. Attempts were made to revive him but these failed. He succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead some time later on Friday morning. According to the Coroner’s Office, the death resulted from the traumatic injuries sustained in the crash.
The Coles County Sheriff’s Office and the Champaign County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the incident. Subsequent accident reports may reveal the precise cause of the crash.
