Shearon was traveling southbound on the Illinois 105 when the accident took place. Conrad J. Gillespie was traveling northbound at the time and in an attempt to overtake another vehicle, he moved into the southbound lane. This brought his vehicle directly into the path of Shearon’s car.
The head-on collision caused Shearon’s vehicle to moved into the other lane and collide with a second vehicle. Shearon sustained critical injuries in the crash and died. Following the crash, Gillespie was found to be intoxicated. Investigations revealed that his blood alcohol concentration was more than twice the legal limit.

However, the more serious charges against him were dropped after he agreed to plead guilty to reckless homicide. It was based on this admission that his charges were reduced. The maximum sentence for the charge against him, which is considered a Class 3 felony in Illinois law, was five years. However, as per the latest accident reports surrounding the incident, he received only three years.
