The car accident report revealed that the crash happened near the intersection of Hartnell Avenue and School Street. The RPD said that at about 12:15 p.m., Ireland drove a Nissan Sentra northbound on SS. He reportedly fell asleep behind the wheel and collided with a utility pole.

Paramedics and fire crew with the Redding Fire Department responded quickly as the incident occured in front of Fire Station 5. The driver and Dominguez, his passenger, suffered minor injuries, and medics took the latter to a local hospital for evaluation.
The police said that Ireland and his passenger wore seatbelts, and their airbags deployed accurately. Officers do not believe that drugs or alcohol contributed in any capacity. They disclosed that the crash affected cable lines, and they fell across Hartnell Avenue.
