An 89-year-old man of San Rafael lost his life on Friday, August 7th, in a plane crash in the Lakeport area of California. Matthew Heron was the only occupant of the aircraft he was flying in, and he died from his injuries at the crash site.

The accident report released by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office disclosed that at about 5:40 p.m., they received a notification of an overdue plane that had not gotten to its destination. The report came from the Williams Soaring Center.

The center informed the police that Heron’s plane, a LAK-17B FES MINI Gilder left Lampson Airfield at 2 p.m. on its way to Mendocino County. The sheriff’s office began a search for the aircraft using the last known GPS and located it on Matthews Road.

The investigation into the crash’s cause is ongoing and headed by the Federal Aviation Authority and the National Transportation Safety Board.

An airplane is one of the safest means of transportation, but it sometimes suffers mishaps that lead to accidents, and they are mostly fatal. A common cause of plane accidents is an equipment failure or malfunction caused by a design flaw, manufacturer flaws, or wear and tear from usage.

Others are human errors on the part of the pilot or the air traffic controllers, mid-air collisions, although rare, and adverse weather conditions. Pilots should avoid flying during adverse weather conditions like gusts of wind, freezing ice storms, thunderstorms, and lightning.
