Carlos Guzman is expected to appear in court on July 31 to face charges of aggravated DUI and endangering the life of a child. He was held on $10,000 bail.

Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney C.J. Orrantia said police officers in Schaumburg received a report that a black vehicle was “speeding, weaving, slamming on the brakes, and drifting” in the area of I-90 and Meacham Road.

When officers got to the intersection of Higgins Road and Frontage Road, they found two badly damaged vehicles, Orrantia reported.

Guzman was standing outside one vehicle holding a baby while a woman was trapped in the other.

Orrantia said officers saw signs that Guzman was intoxicated and they noticed three empty beer bottles and a poorly secured car seat in his vehicle.

Eyewitnesses said Guzman’s car ran a red light and hit the other car.

It is not clear if Guzman was the father of the child and no information was provided about whether the baby suffered any injuries.

The trapped woman’s condition was not immediately clear.

In Illinois, an aggravated DUI is a felony charge. The maximum fine is $25,000 but drivers convicted of this offense can face additional penalties depending on the circumstances.
