Preliminary reports showed that the fatal victim, identified as Joe Jason Henigan, a 36-year-old Peoria resident, was driving his vehicle eastbound on Spring Street. At the same time, a marked Peoria Police Department SUV was traveling through the south traffic lanes on Jefferson. The two cars collided at the intersection, leaving their occupants injured.
Emergency responders transported Henigan to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, Peoria, with injuries described as life-threatening. The victim eventually gave in to his wounds following several days of intense treatment. Doctors at the health facility pronounced him dead at precisely 5:28 p.m. on Monday. The PCCO ruled his cause of death as multiple blunt force trauma injuries.
The officer involved also suffered serious injuries, and medics rushed him to an area hospital. The accident reports failed to divulge information about the officer’s condition at this time.
