Lowell at about 4:15 p.m. Friday was driving a motorcycle northbound on Massachusetts 495 when he pulled over onto the highway’s shoulder near the junction with Massachusetts 95 near Salisbury, according to car accident reports. Troopers said a vehicle driving in the highway’s left lane observed Barry and, thinking he was about to merge into traffic, applied her brakes.
The second driver was followed by the driver of a pickup truck, authorities said. He reportedly swerved to avoid a collision, but ended up striking Barry’s parked motorcycle in the process, causing Barry to be thrown over a guardrail.
Emergency medical personnel transported Barry to Beth Israel Medical Center via Med Flight, but he later was pronounced dead from his injuries, troopers said.
Police did not provide identifying information for either of the other drivers. Both drivers, a 62-year-old Douglas woman and a 77-year-old man from Turner, Maine, remained on scene until authorities arrived, according to car accident reports.
The Massachusetts State Police continues to investigate the incident. Authorities have not announced any charges or citations in connection to the wreck.
