Martin at about 3 p.m. Monday was driving northbound on Interstate 294 when he attempted to exit the freeway at Ogden Avenue, police said in a press release. Martin’s vehicle crashed into a guardrail, drove onto Ogden Avenue and then struck a tree within the Bemis Woods Cook County Forest Preserve.
Car accident reports state emergency medical workers were called to the scene. However, Martin “had no signs of life” by the time they arrived, according to a press release.
Martin was the lone occupant of his vehicle when he crashed, police said.
“The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office has determined that Mr. Martin died from blunt-force trauma resulting from the impact with the tree,” authorities wrote in a press release.
The crash still is being investigated by the Western Springs Police Department. It is not clear from car accident reports available Tuesday whether authorities suspect factors like inattentive driving, intoxication or speed might have been contributing factors.
Witnesses or others with information about the crash are asked to call Western Springs Police Department at 708-246-8540. If more details become available, they likely will be included in forthcoming public records.
