Morales at about 5:15 p.m. Monday was driving on North 176th Avenue near Pentwater when he attempted to pass another vehicle, authorities said. However, he lost control of his vehicle and left the roadway before overcorrecting and veering into oncoming traffic, car accident reports state.
Morales then collided head-on with another vehicle operated by Branch, authorities reported. The crash caused Morales’ vehicle to burst into flames.
Deputies said the wreck occurred on a stretch of the highway between Jackson and Rossel Lake roads.
Both Morales and Guajardo died at the scene of the wreck, emergency medical personnel reported. First responders had to rescue Branch from the fiery wreckage of her vehicle, and she was airlifted to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries, according to car accident reports.
The Oceana County Sheriff’s Department continues to investigate the incident. Car accident reports released as of Tuesday don’t say whether investigators believe factors like speed, inattentive driving or intoxication contributed to the crash.
