The officers found the woman, who remains unnamed, with a wound to her neck, and Alonso still with her, without fleeing. They detained the young man, while the older woman received first aid treatment from the paramedics.

An ambulance then conveyed the woman from the scene to a waiting helicopter. The latter took her to a hospital in Sonoma County. The police took Alonso into custody and booked him into the Mendocino County Jail.

The young man is facing charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and felony battery. Alonso also got charged with elder abuse. The FBPD is investigating to determine what led to the attack. They will update the public as things unfold.

According to the World Health Organization, elder abuse occurs when several or a single act causes harm or distress to an older person. WHO estimates that 15.7% of people 60 years and above are victims of abuse.

The abuse has severe consequences for the victims and society. Thus, the organization recommends urgent public health actions to protect and preserve the rights of older people.
