Based on their preliminary investigation, the rider of the motorcycle was splitting lanes when he ran into the back of a pickup truck. Lane splitting is when a motorcycle rider drives between lanes and cars in slowed or stopped traffic.

After running into the back of the truck, 27-year-old Patrick Custodio of San Leandro, was thrown from the motorcycle. He was hit by at least one other vehicle after his body landed in the roadway.

The California Highway Patrol called in the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Coroner’s Bureau for collection of the body and identification. They pronounced Custodio dead at the scene of the accident from the injuries he sustained.

Police do not suspect that drugs or alcohol played a factor in the accident that claimed Custodio’s life. They do believe that speed could have been a factor, but an accident reconstruction will have to be done to verify this.

An autopsy is possible to determine which injuries caused Custodio’s death due to the initial impact and then being hit by at least one other vehicle.

The California Highway Patrol is point on the investigation and will release more information as it becomes available.
