The CHP has not revealed if the marijuana was for medical purposes or recreational. But they have stated that Barrios will get charged with vehicular manslaughter for the death of Felicitas Navarro, 57, the driver of the Toyota, and driving under the influence of marijuana causing bodily harm.
While the accident remains under investigation, the CHP preliminary report showed that Navarro, who was heading north on the freeway, had lost control of her car, which spun out of control until it struck the center divider.
A man driving a Toyota Corolla, who remains unidentified, then stopped his vehicle and alighted to help Navarro and her two unnamed passengers. At the same time, Barrios, who was driving at high speed, approached the scene of the initial crash.
The young woman ended up slamming the side of the Toyota Scion, causing it to roll over and burst into flames. Navarro was pronounced dead by the paramedics, while her passengers were transported to the hospital with critical wounds.
The man who stopped to assist the deceased, as well as Barrios and her two passengers, also ended up hospitalized with severe wounds. There is no information on the current status of all six injured people, but the CHP will provide updates as events unfold.
