The driver of the truck who was at the scene and is unnamed told the officers that he had just gotten back onto the interstate after pulling over to deal with an equipment issue when the crash occurred.
Tumlin, for reasons that remain unknown, crashed his Kia Sportage into the rear of the truck. The impact left the deceased with extensive injuries, killing him instantly, and leaving the front of the Kia wrecked.
The fatal crash led the authorities to shut down the northbound lane of the interstate, with traffic redirected to Buford Highway and Satellite Boulevard. The road remained closed until about 9 a.m. when it was reopened.
The truck driver was allowed to leave after the preliminary investigation as he had no liability in the crash. A toxicology and autopsy report will reveal Tumlin’s cause of death, and whether or not he had drugs or alcohol in his system at the time of the accident.
The investigation remains active, and the public will receive an update from the police as events unfold.
