It is always important to think of a railroad track as a busy highway. The only difference is that it is utilized by trains instead of cars.
Trains are not capable of stopping like a car can. It can take up to 18 football field lengths for a train to stop.
When encountering a train track as a pedestrian, it is important to remember to cross them like you would a busy street. Make sure you are using the designated crossing paths. Signage and signals will indicate that you are in the right place.
Just like when crossing a street, make sure you look both ways. Sometimes a track can be a double track. This means that there could be two trains at one time. Make sure both ways are clear before attempting to cross.
Don’t stand too close when a train is coming. It is actually possible for the force of a train to pull you toward it if you are standing too close to the tracks when it goes by.
Finally, make sure you are not distracted. Do not listen to loud music or have on headphones when you are near a track. Don’t walk and text or talk on your cell phone. Be diligent in listening for the train’s whistle.
Simple steps like these can help you stay safe if you are near a train or train track.
