NBC San Diego reports that the crash took place in the San Fernando Valley at about 2 p.m. Thursday. Clarke, a 6’7″ guard who’d recently completed his freshman season at Kentucky and had declared himself for the upcoming draft, was headed home from a workout when he collided with a truck that was attempting to make a left turn at a traffic light. Clarke’s Hyundai Genesis ricocheted into a light pole and then a concrete wall.
Emergency responders rushed him to Northridge Hospital Medical, where he died.
The truck’s driver was uninjured.
Police believe that Clarke had been traveling at “a very high rate of speed” at the time, and had not been wearing his seatbelt.
