One woman died and a man was injured when a vehicle drove onto the sidewalk striking them both.
The accident happened about 5:10 p.m. in Garden Grove near the intersection of Westminster Avenue and Brookhurst Street.

The Toyota Sienna veered onto the sidewalk and hit the two unidentified pedestrians, a 77-year-old woman, and a 79-year-old man, and landed on top of the two, according to news reports. Multiple people helped remove the vehicle off of the victims. The woman suffered major trauma and was pronounced dead at the hospital. The man sustained multiple fractures and was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center and is in stable condition
The unidentified driver of the Sienna is a 45-year-old male. A 3-year-old boy was the other occupant in the Sienna and he was taken to CHOC Children’s Hospital in Orange County as a precaution.
The driver stayed on scene and there were no signs of impairment.
Pedestrian fatalities remain a high statistic, according the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). There were 6,283 pedestrians killed in traffic accidents in 2018. That is the most deaths since 1990.
The NHTSA has some guidelines for pedestrian safety:
- Follow the rules; obey signs and signals.
- Keep alert at all times.
- Walk facing traffic and keep as far away from traffic as able.
- Cross streets and cross walks.
- Don’t assume a driver sees you. Attempt to make eye contact to ensure being seen.
- Be aware of cars backing up in parking lots and entering/exiting driveways.
