Witnesses told authorities they saw a Toyota Camry speed through a red light and slam into a semi-truck at the intersection.
Two motorists were pinned in their vehicle and rescued by responders before being taken to a nearby hospital. California Highway Patrol Officer and spokesperson Josh Greengard said the patients sustained severe head trauma in the accident.
CHP traffic logs indicated the intersection was closed to all traffic while the motorists were being extricated.
Greengard said officers found several empty alcoholic containers in the vehicle, leading to a DUI investigation.
