CHP spokesman Officer Travis Garrow said the roadway was affected by inclement winter-weather conditions when a southbound 2018 Ford Transit-250 van crossed into oncoming traffic and hit a 2007 Ford F-450 flatbed truck.
The driver of the van, a 62-year-old man from San Diego, passed away from his injuries. The driver of the northbound truck, a 66-year-old man from San Diego, was transported to Palomar Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. As of Monday evening, he was still recovering in the hospital.
Authorities are still uncertain of what caused the van to cross into the opposite lane. According to Garrow, drugs and alcohol are not believed to have played a role.
