The illegal fireworks were stored in a bomb squad truck in a south-central neighborhood.
Although the truck had been rated for much larger explosions, it experienced catastrophic failure when officers attempted to ignite the explosives.
The explosion injured 10 officers and 7 residents of the neighborhood. Although several of the injuries are serious, none are expected to be life-threatening.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the containment unit failure.
