During the investigation, the CHP discovered that Gonzalez stole the car early that morning from a restaurant on M St. and Olive Avenue in Merced. The officers said that the Merced Police Department informed them that the suspect carjacked the owner of the Honda, who called 911 to make a report.
The MPD was investigating the case when the crash happened. They booked the man into the Merced County Jail on charges of trying to hurt a peace officer, carjacking, robbery, and having a stolen car. Officers determined that the suspect was impaired at the time of the occurrence and charged him with driving under the influence of a controlled substance.
