The California Highway Patrol is investigating an auto-pedestrian collision that killed a male pedestrian in Perris, California. Gilberto Camarena, 23, of La Puente, lost his life on Saturday night, June 25th.

The CHP investigators said in the accident report that the collision happened around 10:50 p.m. on Escondido (215) Freeway near D Street. The man allegedly waved and shouted at passing vehicles before one of them struck him. Camarena suffered a fatal wound, and medics pronounced him dead at the scene.

The investigators did not state if they identified the vehicle’s driver that struck the victim, and they have not made any arrest. The investigation into the occurrence is ongoing, and the CHP will release updates as events unfold.

An auto-pedestrian collision occurs when a motor vehicle strikes a person, causing either severe bodily harm or death. The problem of people getting killed on California roadways is bad and steadily getting worse. According to the Cal-Office of Traffic Safety, the conception that drivers are at fault in every crash of this nature is wrong, as pedestrians also play a role.

Pedestrian mistakes account for nearly as many crashes as do drivers with more people choosing to walk to work, school, malls, or for fun and exercise. Common errors made by pedestrians include jaywalking, texting or calling when walking, crossing out of designated crosswalks, and failing to use the sidewalk.

Drivers and pedestrians can avoid collisions by practicing safe road behaviors. Doing the latter would not only protect them, but it would also protect those around them and prevent adverse legal consequences.
