Witnesses told investigators that Perez was one of several motorcyclists heading north in the 2500 block of North Fifth Avenue at about 4:15 p.m. Sunday when he stopped traffic at the intersection with Country Club Road to allow the group to cross together.
Police said Perez then, in an apparent effort to catch up to the other motorcyclists, moved into the southbound lane. However, while he was attempting to pass two other vehicles, he was struck head-on by an oncoming SUV, according to car accident reports.
Perez was taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries deemed by authorities to be life-threatening. He was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after the crash.
Authorities said the driver of the other vehicle was treated at the scene by paramedics and was released. Car accident reports do not provide identifying information for the second driver.
The incident remains under investigation by the St. Charles Police Department. Authorities have not said whether they suspect the involvement of contributing factors, such as use of intoxicants or excessive speed. No charges or citations have been announced by investigators.
