The investigators said that the man ran a red light around 2:25 a.m. at the intersection of Water Street and Grand Avenue, causing him to collide with a semi-trailer. The collision’s impact left King, Bowman, Harper, and Cooper, with severe injuries. The medics rushed them to Decatur Memorial Hospital, where they passed away while receiving treatment.
Dixon fled from the accident scene on foot but later went to the same hospital as the victims to treat his injuries. The doctors ran a blood test on the suspect and discovered that he had a .159 blood alcohol concentration.
The police said that means the man had a .25 BAC at the time of the collision. They also obtained video footage of Dixon in the driver’s seat when it rested after the crash. The investigators charged him with aggravated driving under the influence causing death and leaving the scene of an accident.
