The two were killed when the motorcycle on which they were traveling crashed into a concrete wall.
The accident happened around 12:20 a.m. on General Hudnell Drive in the area of Cupples Road.
Police said Reinerio was riding the bike while Franklin was on the back. The father reportedly lost control of the motorcycle when he came upon a bend in the road and he crashed.
Family members who were riding on another bike witnessed the crash and called for assistance.
Paramedics tried to save the father and son but they both died at the scene.
SAPD investigators said the Lopezes were wearing helmets and they don’t believe they were speeding.
However, there is no word on what could have caused Reinerio to lose control of his motorbike. This information could come in future accident reports.
At the start of May – Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month – the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Department of Transportation noted that motorcycles are more exposed than other vehicles.
According to TxDot, there were more than 7,500 motorcycle accidents in 2019 and 406 of them resulted in a death. Among the fatal crashes, around 46 percent of the victims were not wearing helmets.
On average, a motorcyclist is killed in Texas every day.
