McNulty on Monday morning stole a public works truck from a neighborhood in South Boston and drove it to Cambridge, police said. According to car accident reports, he eventually crashed the truck into a fence located along River Street.

Police said McNulty tried to the leave the scene on foot. However, authorities apprehended him not far from the crash scene at about 7:52 a.m. Monday.

Investigators have not disclosed whether they know why McNulty stole the truck in the first place. Car accident reports do not say whether authorities suspect the involvement of factors like inattentive driving, speed or intoxication.

The Cambridge Police Department continues to investigate the incident. It is unclear whether more citations or charges are forthcoming.

Online records do not list any court dates that have been scheduled for the near future. It is unclear whether McNulty has hired an attorney.
