The CHP said that Veredas started the chain of events that led to the crash. The Sonora resident was driving a 2017 Honda Civic on the south lane of Parrotts Ferry Road. At the same time, Mansfield was traveling north in a 2003 Ford Explorer on the same roadway.
The female driver then drifted into the northbound lane, entering directly into the path of the Ford. The male driver could not avoid her on time, and they ended up colliding head-on. Mansfield sustained severe injuries, and the paramedics rushed him to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.
Veredas, and Lawrence, a passenger in the Honda, sustained moderate non-life-threatening injuries. The medics took them to Adventist Health Sonora for treatment. The authorities determined that the female driver was under the influence at the time of the accident and arrested her on suspicion of DUI.
The accident report did not contain additional information, and the investigation is still active. The CHP will provide an update at a later date.
