The Hampton Police Department is mourning one of their own after a single-vehicle accident claimed the life of their 57-year-old Police Chief Terry Engle. The Rock Island County Coroner Brian Gustafson confirmed in a statement on Sunday, April 12, that the decedent was identified as Engle.

According to the Illinois State Police, the accident that claimed the life of Engle occurred on Illinois Route 84 northbound at the intersection with 180th Street North. For unknown reasons, Engle’s patrol vehicle left the roadway, striking a tree.

Based on records, Engle was responding to a 911 call at 6:45 p.m. when the accident took place. His vehicle was the only one involved in the accident.

Gustafson also released in his statement that the preliminary cause of death was due to multiple traumatic injuries sustained in the accident. The reports were unclear if Engle was pronounced dead at the scene or if he was transported to the hospital where he died.

Before serving with the Hampton Police Department as their Chief of Police, Engle had been a police officer for Black Hawk College Police Department for 35 years. He had been with the Hampton Police Department for the last two years. His total service to the community had been for 37 years before his end of watch.

The Illinois State Police are currently investigating the accident that killed one of their own.
