Investigators determined that the 2010 Chino motorcoach was traveling westbound on the state route, east downhill from Antelope Road when for reasons yet unknown, he veered off his lane and took to the eastbound traffic route.
Almost immediately, the wrong-way vehicle, driven by an 84-year-old man from San Luis Obispo, crashed head-on into an oncoming Freightliner truck moving uphill, resulting in dual-car wreckage, with the truck tractor rolling off the roadway, before halting, wheels up.
The operator of the motorcoach, whose name was not immediately disclosed, was killed in the ghastly accident, while the other motorist involved suffered severe injuries.
Paramedics responded to the traffic collision shortly after and transported the injured victim to the Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center, San Luis Obispo, where he has remained in critical condition.
The CHP identified the injured motorist as Jesus Duarte Lopez, a native of Salinas. Neither drugs nor alcohol was suspected as a factor in the traffic accident. Officers also determined that none of the drivers appeared to have been distracted at the time of the crash.
Investigations into the fatal incident are still in the works to ascertain the cause of the collision.
