Investigation uncovered that a lone snowmobiler was traveling along Trail #452 when he lost control of his snowmobile. His snowmobile left the trail and crashed into a tree.
Troopers identified the snowmobile driver as 28-year-old Zackary Snider of Hart.
Whitefish Fire and Emergency Medical Services and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources responded to the scene of the accident and assisted in the investigation.
They pronounced Snider dead at the scene of the accident. The crash still remains under investigation.
Protective gear is important when riding on a snowmobile. The reports did not indicate what kind of personal protective gear Snider was wearing at the time of the accident.
Multiple layers of clothing are important when snowmobiling. Staying dry is important to combat hypothermia and frostbite.
Wearing a helmet is important due to the potential of accidents and head injuries from branches or other flying debris like ice or chunks of snow.
Face coverings are recommended to protect the skin. Goggles should be worn if the helmet does not come with a built-in shield. This protects the eyes from injury.
Gloves and socks are essential for protecting the hands and feet from potential injuries from cold.
Although there is nothing to avoid accidents like the one Snider encountered, the outcome may have been different had he not been alone at the time of the accident. Making sure to inform people where you will be and how long you will be gone could save a life.
