Jewett, of Effingham, Illinois, was driving a 2014 Ford Explorer that had a U-Haul trailer attached. He was parked on the right shoulder on the westbound side of the interstate. The trailer was sticking out slightly into lanes of oncoming traffic.
At this same time, 37-year-old Joshua Dearden, of Pratt, Kansas, was passing by in a 2019 International semitractor-trailer.
Dearden did not follow Scott’s Law, also known as the “move over law.” According to this law, a driver must move to another lane when there is a disabled vehicle on the shoulder.
Dearden’s semitruck struck the trailer on Jewett’s car. Dearden’s semi-truck then traveled off the road and toward the median on the left side. Finally, it stopped in the median.
The Illinois State Police arrived on the scene. According to a report, one of the drivers was injured in the crash. However, the report does not say which driver was injured.
Both of the drivers received tickets. Jewett received a ticket for improper parking on the road. Dearden received a citation for improper passing of a vehicle, or breaking Scott’s Law.
