A bail bond is a form of security that reassures the court system that if they allow someone who is being charged with a crime to be released from jail until it is time for the trial, that they will show up. If they do not show up, they forfeit their bond. Generally, these are done through a specific business set up to accommodate bail bonds.
Lopez is currently being charged with intoxication manslaughter, intoxications assault, an accident involving injury, and accident involving death. The prison time associated with the manslaughter charge alone could see Lopez spending the next 20 years behind bars for the accident.
The original accident occurred when both Cantu and Lopez were traveling westbound on Minnesota Road when he lost control and rear-ended Cantu’s vehicle.
The name of the passenger in Cantu’s vehicle that was transported to the hospital for minor injuries has not been disclosed, nor has their condition.
Lopez had also sustained minor injuries and was treated at the hospital and released. Once he had been released, he was taken into custody by the Hidalgo County Police Department. He is currently being held at the jail until he can make bail.
Lopez has a prior DWI conviction on his record from 2008. In the state of Texas, a second DWI within 5 years of the first conviction can increase the sentencing. It is unclear at this point if the courts will take into consideration the presence of a prior DWI on Lopez’s record.
