In the original news story, Officer Michael Love, Officer Alan McCollum, and an undisclosed third officer made a traffic stop on Friday night along Highway 358 when they were hit by a vehicle driven by 26-year-old Brandon Portillo. Portillo was charged with intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault for the injuries to Officer Love and the death of Officer McCollum.
Officer Love expressed to Representative Cloud that he understands that he has a long road to recovery ahead of him. He shared the story of the accident and how he had to push a car off of himself in order to get free.
Despite the hospital room setting and the death of a colleague, Officer Love was in good spirits during the visit. He intends to stay on as a civil servant for Corpus Christi once he is fully healed and has been rehabilitated from his current injuries.
Cloud made the point to say that even though he was coming to encourage the officer, that the officer ended up encouraging him. He had been told this about Officer Love and it turned out to be true.
The visit was kept short so that Officer Love’s daughter could spend time with her father for the first time since the accident occurred.
Officer Love hopes that he will be released from the hospital in time for the funeral of Officer McCollum, which is set for Thursday, February 6.
At this time, there has been no report if the other officer was injured in the accident and their name has not been released.
