Officers had spotted a gun between the man’s legs when they found him sleeping in his car near the intersection of Montezuma Rd and College Avenue.

After waking up, the driver took off and began speeding eastbound on Montezuma Rd. While fleeing, his vehicle swerved off the roadway and crashed into a tree east of the Collwood Boulevard intersection.

Police say the driver was transported to Scripps Mercy Hospital with serious injuries.

His gun was later found by officers at the intersection of Montezuma Rd and 54th Street.
